According to the Hong Kong Companies Ordinance, all companies must display their registered names at their registered offices and business premises, commonly known as "Company Signboards." Many people easily overlook the details of company signboards, leading to potential issues during inspections by the Companies Registry. This article will introduce the requirements for company signboards and their details, helping you avoid mistakes in your company operations.

1. Requirements for Displaying Company Names

Company signboards must be displayed in a legible font and placed in a prominent position at the offices and business premises, making them easily identifiable and accessible to the public. If the location houses 6 or more companies sharing the registered office or business premises, electronic display of the company name is permitted.

The Companies Registry will conduct periodic inspections to ensure limited companies have properly displayed their company signboards. Violations of the requirements can result in a maximum fine of HK$10,000.

2. Electronic Display of Company Names (Electronic Signboards)

For registered offices or business premises with more than 6 companies, companies can choose to display their names electronically. To facilitate the electronic display of company names for multiple companies at a shared location, it is considered compliant with the Companies Ordinance if the registered name is displayed effectively at least once every 4 minutes, with each display lasting at least 15 seconds.

3. Exemption Conditions

Companies are exempted from displaying their registered names at their registered offices and business premises if they meet one of the following conditions:

  • The company has not had any accounting transactions since its incorporation, or
  • A liquidator, receiver, or manager has been appointed, and the company's office or business premises is also the place of business for that liquidator, receiver, or manager.
